The updater is a separate installation package that keeps all of our software up to date. Since administrators might want to control that process themselves, we don't feel it's correct for installation of a package to automatically include an updater.
The updater requests a version manifest from our server, but does not send any telemetry or even what products are installed. If updates are needed, it downloads the newer MSI file, verifies the digital signature of the package, and then updates the installation.
Registry keys are provided which can tune the update frequency or time of day the updates run, and an ADMX file is included to control those settings via Group Policy.
